Understanding AI: what it is and how it works

What AI, machine learning, and generative AI actually mean, how large language models produce answers — the honest version — and the one idea every rule in the course is built on: AI tools are pattern predictors, not fact engines.

Speaking AI: essential terminology

The working vocabulary (prompt, model, context window, knowledge cutoff) and the risk vocabulary (hallucination, shadow AI, prompt injection, deepfake) — in plain English. Recognize, don’t memorize.

Hallucination as confident fabrication (including the real fake-citations court case), bias and stale knowledge, where your prompt data actually goes, and automation bias — why good tools make us worse checkers.

Paige Hanson is a co-founder of SecureLabs and spent 16 years leading cyber safety education at NortonLifeLock (formerly LifeLock). She designed the national identity-theft training program for law enforcement in partnership with FBI-LEEDA — delivered in all 50 states to roughly 17,000 officers — and has trained thousands of victim advocates and military personnel. Nearly two decades of turning real-world threat intelligence into plain-language lessons shape every module in SecureLabs Academy.

Who is this AI security awareness training for?

Every employee. The course assumes zero technical background and focuses on the habits any worker needs to use AI tools safely and to recognize AI-powered attacks. It is appropriate for all roles and departments.

How long does the course take?

It is self-paced. The course is six short modules that learners can complete in one sitting or spread out over time, and each module ends with a quick knowledge check.

Is there a certificate or completion record?

Yes. Learners take a 10-question final assessment with an 80% pass mark (retakes are permitted after review). Completion records and scores are retained as training evidence for compliance and audit purposes.

Does this satisfy SOC 2 or ISO 27001 awareness training requirements?

It is built to support them. SOC 2, ISO 27001, and NIST-aligned programs all expect a workforce trained on the risks it actually faces — which in 2026 includes AI. The course provides auditable completion evidence to demonstrate that coverage.
